Vienna's cultural institutions increasingly understand that children don't want to be passive observers. The most successful family programmes invite young visitors to create, experiment, move, question and participate.
This summer, we've selected the programmes that go beyond traditional museum visits and offer meaningful cultural experiences for families.
Create Imaginary Worlds at Kunsthalle Wien
Age: 6–10
Location: MuseumsQuartier, 1070 Vienna
When: Multiple dates throughout June and July 2026
Why we love it
Many family workshops focus on crafts. Kunsthalle Wien starts with contemporary art and uses it as a springboard for imagination.
Inspired by the exhibition Lebt und arbeitet in Wien, children are invited to invent their own characters and stories before bringing them to life using textiles, cardboard and other materials. The workshop combines exhibition viewing with creative making, helping children engage with contemporary art in a natural and playful way.
This is one of the few programmes in Vienna that genuinely introduces children to contemporary art rather than simply providing an art activity.

Spend a Week Exploring Fashion, Identity & Culture at KHM, Weltmuseum Wien and Theatermuseum
Age: 6–10
Location: Heldenplatz, 1010 Vienna
When: Summer Academy sessions in late July and August
Why we love it
If your child enjoys asking questions about other cultures, this is one of the most thoughtful summer programmes in Vienna.
The Summer Academy connects the collections of Weltmuseum Wien, Kunsthistorisches Museum and Theatermuseum through a week-long programme of storytelling, creative workshops and hands-on exploration. This year's theme focuses on clothing and fashion from different cultures and historical periods.
Rather than presenting cultures as static displays, children are encouraged to think about how clothing expresses identity, belonging and creativity.

Dance Your Way Through Summer with ImPulsTanz
Age: Various programmes from approximately 8+
Location: Multiple venues across Vienna
When: July–August 2026
Why we love it
Most visitors know ImPulsTanz as one of the world's leading contemporary dance festivals. Fewer realise how much of the programme is designed for children and families.
This summer's family offerings include creative movement workshops, inclusive dance programmes, hip-hop classes and multidisciplinary formats that combine movement, imagination and storytelling.
For families looking to introduce children to contemporary performance, there is simply nothing comparable in Vienna.
Don't miss the free Public Moves classes taking place outdoors throughout the city.

Discover the World's Stories Through Making at Weltmuseum Wien's Open Family Studio
Age: 3–10
Location: Heldenplatz, 1010 Vienna
When: Selected dates throughout summer
Why we love it
Some museum workshops feel disconnected from the exhibitions they accompany.
The Open Family Studio successfully bridges both worlds. Families explore objects and stories from the museum's collections before creating something themselves. Recent workshops have explored sustainability, upcycling and craft traditions through hands-on making.
The intergenerational format makes this a particularly good choice for siblings of different ages.

Introduce Younger Children to Museums at ZOOM Kindermuseum
Age: 0–12
Location: MuseumsQuartier, 1070 Vienna
When: Throughout July and August
Why we love it
Many museums create programmes for children. ZOOM was built entirely around them.
The museum's exhibitions and environments are designed to encourage exploration through touch, movement and play. For younger children, ZOOM Ocean remains one of Vienna's most imaginative museum experiences, transforming the museum into an immersive underwater world.
If you're introducing a child to museums for the first time, this is where we'd start.

See Vienna Through Hundertwasser's Eyes
Age: All ages
Location: Kunst Haus Wien & Hundertwasserhaus
When: Anytime
Why we love it
Not every cultural experience needs to happen inside a workshop.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser's architecture offers one of the most child-friendly introductions to art in Vienna. The bright colours, unusual forms and rejection of straight lines encourage children to look more carefully at the built environment around them.
Turn your visit into a creative challenge: How many different window shapes can you find? Which details would you include in your own dream house?
It's an easy reminder that culture can happen outside museum walls.

Design the Future at MAK
Age: 8+
Location: Stubenring, 1010 Vienna
When: Throughout summer, including MAK Summer Studios end of July
Why we love it
Art museums often focus on the past.
The MAK asks children to think about the future.
Through exhibitions dedicated to design, architecture, sustainability and innovation, children are encouraged to see themselves not only as consumers of culture but as future designers, architects and problem-solvers.
The Summer Studios are particularly worthwhile for children who enjoy making, building and experimenting.
